Also recognizable are Ceres, with a sheaf of wheat, and Bacchus, wearing a crown of vine leaves. The sketch may have been presented as a proposal by Tiepolo for the decoration of a ceiling in the Palacio Real in Madrid. Tiepolo was summoned to Spain in 1762 to decorate the throne room; a ceiling on this theme was painted in the queen's bedroom in 1763 by the artist's German rival, Anton Raphael Mengs. Date: 1725-29.This painting is from a series of ten magnificent canvases painted to decorate the main room of Ca' Dolfin, Venice. The battle has been tentatively identified as the great victory of Gaius Marius over the fierce Teutonic tribes in Lombardy in 101 B.C. The tribe of the Cimbri had crossed the Alps near Trent and invaded the Veneto, whose mild climate and delicacies reputedly sapped their strength. Their defeat saved Rome from conquest. (34.3 x 26.3 cm)Image: 8 7/8 x 6 15/16 in. (22.6 x 17.6 cm). Date: ca. 1743-50.Tiepolo who was famed for his luminous frescoes populated by Olympian gods and allegorical figures, gave free reign to his fantasy in his print series the Scherzi, a number of which depict the nymphs and satyrs who were followers of Bacchus (the Greek Dionysos), god of wine. From the Renaissance on, satyrs are often indistinguishable from Pan--the goat-legged figure in ancient art--yet the seated figure here, with his horns and bristly crown, pipes in hand, could be intended as the woodland god.
